Big Rams
in the Cowboy State
Yellowstone National Park is one of
the most popular tourist attractions in
the United Sates. With thousands of
employees and more than two million
visitors each year, the park seems to stay
filled with people. But just eight miles away
and at approximately 9,200 ft. elevation, Justin Jarrett and
Wapiti Ridge Outfitters have set up a base camp for a
different type of “tourist attraction” — hunting the Rocky
Mountain bighorn sheep. “I was born in this part of Wyoming and raised in the
west, hunting and fishing these mountains,” says Justin, who
guided for legendary outfitter Dean Johnson before buying
the business. Johnson operated one of Wyoming’s most
successful outfitting businesses beginning in 1967. “I’m
honored and excited to carry on these outdoor traditions
and can assure you that your experience with Wapiti Ridge
Outfitters will be one that lasts a lifetime.”
If the first rule of business is “location, location, location,”
then Wapiti Ridge Outfitters is ahead of the game.
They hunt Wyoming’s best trophy bighorn sheep units — 1,
2, 3, 4 and 5 — and have their base camp in area 3. Nestled
in the heart of the Washakie Wilderness area, base camp is a
lone oasis in the vast Shoshone National Forest. An experienced
cook
provides a ranch-style smorgasbord, including fresh baked
bread and desserts. Sleeping tents are spacious with wood
burning stoves, floors, cots, mattresses and drying racks.
Furthermore, Justin acquired Cort Feeley’s Ramshorn
Outfitters priority use permit in early 2008. With this purchase,
Wapiti Ridge essentially has priority use camps in the
three most popular sheep areas in Wyoming — areas 3, 4
and 5. This gives them a distinct advantage as the only outfitter
to hold such priority use camps in the heart of the best
big ram areas in the state.
Justin says that he and his highly qualified guides and
crew take sheep hunting seriously and go the extra mile to
ensure the highest quality hunt available. He and his guides have extensive knowledge of all five of Wyoming’s best
sheep areas. These guys do their homework and in most
cases have their hunter/clients area pre-scouted. It’s a passion
for the entire crew. “Many people wait for years to draw a Wyoming sheep
tag. I waited 12 years to draw and for this hunt it was worth
it,” says Arthur Monahan (NY). Arthur took his ighorn in
2006. “Having been on four sheep hunts, two excellent trips
to Africa, and nine other western state hunts, I can say this
hunt with Justin Jarrett and Wapiti Ridge Outfitters was the
best of the 15 hunts I had.”
Paul Valentine of Las Vegas, NV may not have taken the
first ram of the 2008 season, but it was the first checked and
plugged in the Cody region. That ram earned Paul official
Grand Slam #1447 some 18 years after it all started with an
Alaska Dall ram

been on a couple of unsuccessful bighorn hunts trying to
complete his [Grand] Slam. This ram was too good for him
to pass up and we took him at 10:41 a.m. opening morning.
