This excerpt from the spring '09 issue of Grand Slam® Magazine is a report on a recent combo hunt taken with Tuchodi River Outfitters. While it was sent in primarily as a sheep hunt report it gives tremendous insight into the quality of game in the Tuchodi Valley and the quality of service you will recieve from Larry Warren and his staff:
This October 2006 hunt was my first with Tuchodi River Outfitters. My guide, Lawson Peterson, his brother Sten and I started out on a 15-hour horseback ride to an area they had not hunted in a while. This was the last hunt of the season and I had expected cold weather, but it was a pleasant ride. Along the way we would stop occasionally to glass. Seeing plenty of elk and goats we rode on, reaching a small cabin long after dark. From there we hunted several drainages, and took a billy along the way.
On day four we moved camp. Lots of elk and several large bull moose were found throughout this drainage. As I had tags for both species, Lawson spent considerable time reminding me to focus. Sheep was our first goal, yet repeatedly passing up 320-330” elk and 200” moose was hard for me. I am not exaggerating; this is an elk hunter’s paradise. Finally we got on sheep and one by one, the rams slipped by. As the largest one entered our ambush, Lawson whispered, “284 yards.” The first shot from my 300 WSM knocked the ram down, and the second one made me an official 1/2 Slammer!
The rest of the hunt was spent chasing moose and elk. I took a 300” bull elk on day 12 and I passed on several bull moose. Overall, Tuchodi River Outfitters is one of the best-run operations I have experienced. The area is teeming with game and their personnel are second to none. Thanks to Lawson and Sten for helping me fulfill my Stone sheep dream, and get a fine elk as well.
